The Drake Secular Legal Society has as its purpose:
1) to promote awareness of the constitutional principle of the separation of religion and government as well as the prevalence of violations thereof
2) to develop a network and foster support for Drake Law students who show no obeisance to supernatural hypotheses regarding the origins or present character of the known universe, and
3) to provide a positive atmosphere for all Drake Law students thereby reducing the stigma which some associate with atheism, agnosticism, skepticism, freethought, and secularism.
With that being said, below are some frequently asked questions.
1. What does "secular" mean?
"Secular" can mean many different things. What we, as a legal society, use "secular" to mean is "Not concerned with religion; not religious". That is to say, we believe that government and religion need to be separate institutions. If our government is directly leaning toward one religion, this will favor a certain group while alienating and oppressing another or many others.
2. So, is this just a bunch of atheists?
Long story short: Nope! We are not just a bunch of atheists. Our group, as well as the secular movement as a whole, covers a broad range of beliefs-both religious and philosophical. The group of people fighting for a strong wall of separation between religion and government includes many deeply religious individuals, as well as people who identify as atheist and everything in between!
3. I am religious. Doesn't secularism harm my religion?
No! Contrary to much of the propaganda a secular government can strengthen your religion. When the wall of separation between religion and government disintegrates, a small group of individuals is able to make decisions based solely on their own personal understandings of their own religious beliefs. When religion and government are separate entities, religious individuals are able to practice their religion through their personal choices rather than being forced to abide by another religion's beliefs. A secular government can protect the religious freedom of every individual person and each religion.
